Chapter 27

Beli had scurried from the Hall as soon as Brennos and Caturix retired to the chieftain's private quarters. The silversmith had no desire to linger with other villagers as they dawdled for an idle, meaningless chat with friends. Once again, the only people who had been recognized were the warriors; no acknowledgment was given to the artisans who held the village together. Did they not realize who made the jewelry they wore on this festive occasion? Or the weapons they used in the battles they droned on about? Why even the goblets and trays used to serve the food and drink today had been made by the smiths and woodworkers. Where was the show of appreciation for them? Or acknowledgment that they provided the wealth of the community? Where did they think that came from? He stopped on the path and shook his fist at the Hall. His mind replayed the evening's events as he turned toward home.

The only sliver of appreciation for artisans was focused on Jannon's damned medallion. Beli was sick of hearing about it. It was only brass, a common metal—and the design was nothing worth getting excited over. Plus, the mentor didn't even know what his own apprentice was working on? Shameful.

When Beli had caught Jannon with the ring in his hand inside the bronzesmith's shop, he felt as if he'd discovered gold. Or maybe a nice fat vein of silver. It was perfect—an excellent way to put the warrior's son playing artisan in his place. Of course, Beli knew whose ring it was. He'd made it, after all. He only wished it had been the smith himself who found it—but his foster son was almost as good.

While he sat through the monotonous complaints of others, Beli had daydreamed of his revenge against Tinnus. He roused from his pleasant thoughts when he heard Drutalos recognize that very man, and Tinnus approached the dais. A gift? What? Why had he not thought of doing that? It would have been a wonderful gesture, especially in front of the visiting chieftain, who looked quite important sitting there sipping from one of the silver goblets Beli had made. But suddenly, everyone was gasping over this brooch and how beautiful it was.

Beli wondered what he could make to give the chieftain at Beltane. What could beat that medallion? He had several ingots of silver hidden away; what should he design? Brennos had silver plates, trays, goblets, and even brooches. Something for Queen Boudia, maybe? No. To top that brooch, it needed to be for Brennos. Or both? Matching torcs, perhaps?

The young man was cunning; that was evident. He knew enough about incurring favor that he had worked the bear, the symbol of the chieftain, into his design. Beli wondered if he shouldn't have taken the lad on as foster himself. He'd be a better teacher. He shook his head. Jannon was declared innocent, which meant that, if things worked out, Tinnus would now be accused of stealing the ring. Perhaps
